Many of you are working with non-governmental organizaitons (NGOs) to deploy to Haiti or critical areas.  One word of caution...PREPARE. Not all NGOs are created equal so carefully evaluate what you can do when you partner with a particular agency.  The USAID is the coordinating agency for the federal government and they are hosting daily phonecons for interested agencies to find out about issues on the ground in Haiti. As many of you know the Pediatric Disaster Resource and Training Center was boots on the ground in the early phase of the disaster response in Haiti.  Dr. Ford is the administrative liaison from the CHLA executive leadership team (http://www.chladisastercenter.org/site/c.ntJYJ6MLIsE/b.3569249/k.B4CE/Program_Oversight.htm).  He was embedded with Federal assets on the ground and he was stationed for most of his deployment at the Gheskio Clinic.  The PDRTC took the lead in assisting with his boots on the ground tactical planning, communication package, media awareness and liaisoning with federal assets. Many have worked hard to develop a research network focused on pediatric trauma.  The time is now to push this agenda and move into the formative phases.  We need to dispel the myths that we are not savvy enough or committed enough to pull off a research network.  The data is clear.  We continue to treat kids like small adults and we have not established the body of data and knowledge that is kid focused in trauma.  Pediatric surgeons must get the job done. How do you prepare for disasters?  I believe the answers are in the numbers.  Almost half the population of Haiti 16yo or less...therefore this is essentially a pediatric disaster.  The Pediatric Disaster Resource and Training Center at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles is standing up our informatics center to respond to this crisis.  We have developed PEDSS.  Learn more go to:  http://think-fast-decisions.blogspot.com/ .
